Malta is a small Island in the Mediterranean quite close to North Africa.  Over the centuries, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St John, and the British have all ruled the islands.  This mix of cultures is still evident and contributes to  Malta being one of the most interesting islands in the Mediterranean.
